The
ABC news with Charlie Gibson has been presenting a "Person of the Week"
on their program every Friday evening. As I do not watch the program
regularly, I am not sure when they began this particular type of
reporting. However, I was deeply affected by their story of a young
woman who was attending a small college in one of the eastern states.
Her name is Tiffara Steward, and her story will remain within my heart
for a very long time.
Tiffara is 4' 6" tall and
loves to play basketball. As I recall, her academic grades were high
and she had goals toward an advanced degree. She applied to a larger
school with the hopes of playing college basketball and was accepted as
a student but was declined as even a consideration for the basketball
team. Further, Tiffara was willing to accept those terms....until she
received another offer.
A smaller college knew of
her skills as she had played in high school and had a strong 3 point
shot as well as excelled in steals. They contacted her and invited her
to play for their school with a full scholarship. She accepted and one
of her dreams began to be fulfilled.
She has played
outstanding ball for the school and set records in both 3 point shots
and steals. Tiffara became one of the co-captains of the team. Her
teammates were awed by her abilities in that she never used her height
as an excuse for her performance. This truth in itself is quite
amazing, to be so short and be accepted by a college to play ball and
then set records. What is even more amazing is that Tiffara was born
prematurely and was severely physically affected. She has scoliosis
(which is basically a crooked spine) and walks with a limp. She is also
blind in one eye and is partially deaf! And still she excels! Some of
her teammates did not realize she had other physical impairments.
Amazing!
To me, this is all possible because this
young woman sees herself as whole. Her sense of wholeness is not
measured by her physical traits; it is lived through her sense of
purpose and the fulfillment of her dreams. She will always be in
inspiration to me.
So many of us, myself included,
have used various reasons for why we are or are not doing what we love
or living the life we desire. The questions that arose for me after
watching her story were: How whole do I feel? Where am I with my
wholeness today?
Right now in this moment, close
your eyes and take a few deep breaths and tune in to sense your
wholeness. What can you release to allow your wholeness to flow? What
energies would support your sense of wholeness to expand? Observe,
listen, and go forth living wholly........
